What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world’s most recognized English proficiency tests. Designed to evaluate a candidate's ability to understand and communicate in English, IELTS is essential for individuals planning to work, study, or migrate to English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA.

It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the IELTS ensures a comprehensive assessment of a candidate's English skills.

Why is IELTS Important?

English is the third most spoken language globally, with approximately 379 million native speakers and over a billion who use it as a second language. Proficiency in English provides a competitive edge for job seekers, students, and migrants.

If you are looking to work, live or study in an English-speaking country, then you must be able to demonstrate a high level of English language ability.

Being able to communicate in the native language of the country you wish to work or study in, has a wide range of benefits. It is also essential for job opportunities as well as integration into the community.

Benefits of achieving a good IELTS score:

  • Career Opportunities: Many international employers require proof of English proficiency.
  • Higher Education: Universities in English-speaking countries often set minimum IELTS scores for admission.
  • Migration and Residency: Immigration authorities use IELTS scores to evaluate language proficiency for visas and permanent residency.
  • Community Integration: Effective communication helps individuals adapt quickly to new environments.

IELTS Test Structure :

The IELTS exam assesses four major key skills, those are:

  1. Listening:

    • Duration: 30 minutes
    • Format: 4 sections with 40 questions. Candidates listen to conversations and monologues in different contexts and answer questions accordingly.
  2. Reading:

    • Format: 3 sections with 40 questions. The Academic version uses texts from books, journals, and articles, while the General Training version uses everyday reading material.
  3. Writing:

Types of IELTS Tests:

  2. IELTS General Training: Ideal for individuals migrating for work, training programs, or secondary education.

Scoring System:

IELTS is scored on a scale of 0-9.

IELTS scores range from 0 to 9, with each band reflecting a specific level of proficiency.  The higher you can score in your IELTS, reflects a better understanding and ability to communicate in English.

  • Band 9: Expert User
  • Band 8: Very Good User
  • Band 7: Good User
  • Band 6: Competent User
  • Band 5: Modest User

Each immigration body, university, workplace or institution will have specific IELTS score requirements. The score you need will depend on what you are looking to do in the country, i.e work or study.
