UCAT ANZ: University Clinical Aptitude Test for Medicine Entrance in Australia and New Zealand ©

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) is a computer based admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental and clinical science degree programmes.

This standardized test evaluates essential skills and attributes, serving as a critical component for entry into undergraduate medical and dental programs.

What is the UCAT ANZ?

The UCAT ANZ is a computer-based aptitude test used by many universities in Australia and New Zealand as part of the selection process for medical and dental programs. It assesses a range of cognitive abilities and professional behaviors required for a career in the medical field. The test helps universities identify candidates who possess the skills necessary for success in rigorous health science programs and, ultimately, in clinical practice.

Why is the UCAT ANZ Important?

The UCAT ANZ replaced the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) in 2019.  The UCAT ANZ test is only available to a candidate whose educational level at the time of sitting the test is that they are undertaking or have completed the final year of secondary schooling, or higher.

The test helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate abilities and professional behaviors required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as interviews and academic qualifications.

It is also an opportunity to stand out from other applicants and demonstrate aptitude for a demanding programme of study.

Medical schools use the UCAT ANZ to ensure candidates have the problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and professional judgement needed in healthcare. Combined with academic performance and interviews, UCAT ANZ scores give universities a holistic view of applicants' capabilities.

A high score can significantly improve your chances of securing a place in a medical or dental program. Conversely, failing to prepare can put you at a disadvantage in the competitive admissions landscape.

The test consists of five separately timed subtests in multiple-choice format. There are four cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning) and a fifth non-cognitive subtest of Situational Judgement.

UCAT ANZ Structure:

The UCAT ANZ is a two hour computer-based test delivered in Pearson VUE test centres throughout Australia, New Zealand and at some overseas locations.

Please note that some pathways to medicine / dentistry / clinical sciences will not require the UCAT ANZ. For some applicants a different test may be required. For details candidates should refer to the websites of the Universities to which they intend to apply.

The UCAT ANZ consists of five subtests, each designed to assess different aptitudes, and these are as follows :

1. Verbal Reasoning (VR)
2. Decision Making (DM)
3. Quantitative Reasoning (QR)
4. Abstract Reasoning (AR)
5. Situational Judgement (SJ)

Scoring System:

The UCAT ANZ scoring system is as follows:

  • Cognitive Subtests (VR, DM, QR, AR): Each section is scored between 300 and 900.
  • Total Score: Sum of scores for VR, DM, QR, and AR (range: 1200 to 3600).
  • Situational Judgement: Scored in Bands 1 to 4, with Band 1 being the highest.

What is a Good Score?

A competitive UCAT ANZ score varies each year depending on applicant performance, but generally:

  • Average Total Score: Around 2500–2600
  • Top 10%: Typically 2800 or higher
  • Situational Judgement: Band 1 or Band 2 is considered strong

Registration Deadlines:

Need to ensure you register within the designated registration period, typically from early March to mid May every year.

The UCAT ANZ is administered between July and August, and you must schedule your test within this window.
